facebook ruminations I

can we all just take a second to take a step backwards and think about how FUCKING INSANE thefacebook is?

okay.  let me start over.  it says in my little blogger profile guy that one of my interests is my complex relationship with thefacebook.  i will admit, somewhere on the improbable border of proudly and shamefully, that i, at points in my life, have been absolutely obsessed and in love with thefacebook.  schooled in its many uses, its faceted interface, i've been on thefacebook since summer 2004 when a friend of mine from interlochen who went to northwestern said to me, "you should check out this website.  you'll LOVE it."  mind you, this is back when facebook was only at like, 15 big ten schools, and u of m was one of them.  i had just graduated from high school and was like, okay, fine, i'll sign up.  i promptly forgot about thefacebook and went on to have that ridiculous summer between high school and college.

i rediscovered facebook when i realized people actually used it, and the rest is history.

i can find out SO MUCH SHIT on facebook.  and i'm horrifyingly good at it too.  i'm also very well versed in those weird facebook trends that are sort of like a secret language (if you're a guy and all it says in your relationship section is that you're male and looking friendship?  dude, there's a pretty high chance you're gay.  or at least a high chance that someone else has seen it and has thought you were gay.  mayhaps just wondered. ) upon which all good facebook stalkers agree.  there's a facebook language, and i'm fucking fluent.

lately i've been trying to limit my facebook time, logging in every day (mayyyybe even a few times a day, okay, fine, i'll be honest) and letting myself splurge on maybe like, half hour once a week or so.  so deep and complete is my addiction to facebook that, like all addictions, it feels really good, but just fucks you up.   so.  i've taken a relative facebook sabbatical (can you take a partial sabbatical from things?  probably not.) for the past like....well, since january?  maybe.  it's been a while, but tonight i particularly noticed one thing.

wall-to-wall pages are INSANE.  like, i can read someone's facebook wall conversation with their best friend, boyfriend, sister, a complete stranger or, arguably creepiest, their parent.  that's there for me to see.  even if it's not particularly amazing or private or anything, it's still like, a strange thing to spend time doing.  which, facebookstalkers out there, you KNOW you do and you KNOW that it's a wealth of information of you're yknow, out to do some first-class, kick-ass-and-take-names stalkin.

which i swear, i don't do anymore.

well, i try not to.
